If you are planning a trip to Essex and like real ale, where better to stay than in one of the many CAMRA pubs which offer a room for the night too? Here are all the ones in Essex that we could find. Remember, CAMRA rates the quality of beer, not the quality of sheets and pillows – and we have included one pub which offers camping only! But if you like your beer then why not stay at a pub?

Red Lion in Finchingfield

Green King IPA and guest beers. The delightful Essex of Finchingfield, with its village green, has a few good pubs to offer. The Red Lion has a nice beer garden and rooms too. The Red Lion is an old Ridleys pub and still has the original Ridleys sign.

White Hart in Grays

Crouch Vale Brewers Gold and Sharps Bitter served. Just outside Grays town centre, but surrounded by flats, so still very urban. Live blues plays on alternative Thursdays, so could be even noisier than normal. S W Essex CAMRA Pub of the Year award 2007, 2008 & 2009.

The Swan in Great Easton

Adnams and guest bitters served. Dating from the fifteenth century, The Swan retains a wealth of original features with a heavily oak-beamed lounge bar and large inglenook fireplace.

Crown & Thistle in Great Chesterford

Adnams Bitter, Fullers London Pride and guests. Rated as a Gastro Pub too. They have a campsite, not rooms, so you will need a tent. No rooms!

Adnams Bitter and guests. The Dog Inn, Halstead, is a fine example of a traditional English Ale Free House, offering both refreshments and accommodation in a cosy, country setting. It also boasts the best Beer Garden in Halstead.

Hanover Inn in Harwich

Thwaites beers served. The Hanover Inn is a local fisherman’s tavern offering an informal and friendly atmosphere sited in the heart of historic Old Harwich. Look for the church.

Layer Fox in Layer-de-la-Haye

Red Fox Bitter and guest beers. 4 en-suite rooms. Less than four miles from Colchester.

Flitch of Bacon in Little Dunmow

Green King IPA and guest beers. Locally sourced food in the restaurant. Named after The Flitch Trials held in the village. A friendly family run BED & BREAKFAST conveniently located near to Stansted Airport and the Leez Priory.

Victoria Tavern in Loughton

Adnams Bitter, Green King IPA. Good pub food. Set within the leafy woodland of Epping Forest and also very close to the central line into London. Cask marquee accredited and Loughton’s only nominated “Good Beer Guide pub”.

Blue Boar Hotel in Maldon

Adnams Bitter, Farmers Ales. A 14th Century coaching inn in the town centre. CAMRA Branch pub of the year in 2010 and 2011. The hotel offers a range of elegant bedrooms with 28 en-suite bedooms, 4 historic suites, room range from a standard single or doubles with imposing four poster beds. Upstairs function room often has music, some bedrooms are adjacent.

Mighty Oak, Green King IPA. Former brewery pub with restaurant and rooms. The Farmhouse Inn has a range of ten en-suite rooms available.

White Horse Inn in Ridgewell

Regular guest beers. A CAMRA award winning pub. Luxury 4 start accommodation. The White Horse Inn & Lodge is near Colne Valley Railway, the Castle at Castle Hedingham, Gainsborough’s birthplace at Sudbury, historic Lavenham and Audley End House near Saffron Walden. The separate newly built accommodation at the rear of the pub offers two family rooms, five doubles & two twins.

Prince of Wales, Stow Maries

Always a large selection of real ales. Ideally placed for visiting Maldon, Burnham on Crouch, the RHS Gardens at Hyde Hall, Battlesbridge Antiques Centre, Marsh Farm Country Park.

The old stable has been converted into rooms which have been designed with adults in mind, i.e. no children.

Cap & Feather in Tillingham

Wibblers beers. Beer festival in July during the local flower show. A 15th century weather-boarded freehouse with bed and breakfast, bristling with rural charm and rustic character, situated in the historic village of Tillingham about 12 miles east of Maldon. B&B rooms are very reasonably priced.
