House Fire in Harlow Kills 4 People

In the early hours this morning a devastating fire ripped through a home in Barn Mead in Harlow. 3 children and 1 woman, thought to be their mother, have died in the fire.

Update (14.23 hrs, 15/10/12): A 4th child had died and the police are now treating blaze as suspicious.

An 11 year-old girl and 2 boys, aged 6 and 13 years, were killed by the fire. Two other children, a 9 year old boy and a 3 year old girl, are in hospital suffering with serious burns. A man also has minor burns.

The victims of the fire have now been named; Sabah Usmani was the wife and mother. She was a doctor. Here sons Sohaib, 11, and Rayyan, six, and daughters Hira, 13, and Maheen, 3, all died in the fire.

Her husband, Dr Abdul Shakour, fought to save his children but had to jump from an upstairs window before he could rescue them. He is still in hospital suffering with severe smoke inhalation.

When Essex Fire and Rescue arrived at the house the fire had already spread throughout the entire ground floor and flames were coming out of both the back and front doors. The fire developed rapidly, however. fire crews managed to enter the house quickly to rescue the residents who were trapped.

Currently there is no news on how the fire started. Essex Police have made the following statement:

 “The cause of the fire is under investigation and detectives are looking at the circumstances leading up to the fire, and ask that anyone who was in the area of Barn Mead in the early hours of Monday and has any information contacts police at Harlow police station on 101.”

Barn Mead is in the centre of a residential area to the south of Harlow town centre and includes several small cul-de-sacs, one of which it is thought the fire took place.
