Chopra Leaves Essex County Cricket Club for Warwickshire

November 6, 2009

Essex’s opening batsman Varun Chopra just signed a three-year contract with Warwickshire. Chopra, the 22-year-old Ilford lad was offered a new year contract with Essex, but has chosen to transfer to Warwickshire.

He is very grateful for his time at Essex Cricket Club and made the following statement today:

“I would like to thank everyone at Essex for all of their support during my time with the club and in particular special thanks to Paul Grayson and Graham Gooch. In addition I would like to personally thank all of the Essex supporters, players and staff. I have grown up at the club having come through the youth set-up, so the decision to leave is one of the hardest I have ever had to make. However, I am hugely excited about the new challenge in front of me and look forward to returning to Chelmsford next year with Warwickshire.”

Paul Grayson, Essex coach admitted that it is a big loss for Essex. He is one the most talented home grown youngsters Essex has seen for a while. Unfortunately Essex has been unable to provide the opportunities that he needs to take his game to the next level.
