Hylands Park and Garden, Chelmsford

Hylands Park and Gardens are one of Chelmsford most popular visitor attractions. The park covers a large area with open grassland, woodland areas, a Serpentine lake, pond, plus ornamental gardens and of course Hylands House. The One World garden is a very tranquil spot. Hylands Park is possibly best known now for the annual V Festival.

The park is open to the public all year and entrance is free. Gates open at 7.30am and generally close at dusk (times vary throughout the year). It is very popular with dog walkers and runners, as well as families with kites and bicycles. Many people picnic in the park during the summer.

The Stables Centre has some arts and crafts shops, toilets, a second hand bookshop plus the all important tea/coffee shop that also serves cakes, sandwiches and ice creams. There are also art studios where visitors can see and purchase the artists work – these are only open at weekends though. Confirm details before heading out.

The Hylands Estate hosts many events throughout the year including farmers market, antiques fairs, book fairs and craft fairs. There are also many evening events such as plays, music, murder mystery evenings, and ghost tours. These all often sell out fast.

Hylands House can also be hired as a venue for hosting weddings, corporate events and private parties.

  1. I am e mailing you to see if you have any vacancies for volunteers to work at Hylands Park. I live locally and am willing to my hand to anything!! I am considering a change in career, and to be able to get paid work in the new area I would like, I realise volunteering could be an ideal way in. I would like any other information on any other areas in the Essex area that would be useful for me. I.e., conservation, animal welfare.
    Many thanks.

  2. Hi Roz, you will need to call Hylands House direct, I think 01245 605523 is the best phone number to call.

  3. Hi Maria, we do not know their reason, maybe they will comment. I suspect it is because some children are afraid of dogs and parents may have complained about dogs in the cafe area. It does seem a shame if dogs are not allowed within the courtyard though, but I guess it is not possible to please everybody.

It is possible the rule will be changed, it has certainly received a lot of criticism including a letter from Cllr Karen Chilvers from Brentwood West Ward.
