Stansted Airport is a major airport in the UK. It is open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. 17.5 million passengers passed through Stansted in 2013 and it is the 3rd busiest airport in London, and 4th in the UK (only Heathrow, Gatwick and Manchester are busier).
12 airlines now operate out of Stansted, reaching over 150 cities around the world. There is still only 1 runway, although there have been proposals to expand the airport for many years.
The airport employs 10,200 people, 1,316 of who are Stansted Airport Ltd employees. The airport is now owned by Manchester Airport.

Air Moldova Move From Gatwick To Stansted

Some good news for business in Essex this week as Air Moldova announced plans to move from Gatwick Airport to Stansted.
Stansted is now owned by Manchester Airports Group who are keen to see it expand and become a more important airport that can serve not only London and Essex but a larger area of England.
Air Moldova will be flying to Chisinau International Airport in Moldova, which is a land-locked country between Romania and Ukraine.
Flights are due to start at the end of April 2013. There will be 2 flights a week, every Friday and Monday.
This airport has the potential to provide transit for many people in the Bacaú region of eastern Romania when work restrictions are lifted at the end of 2013. The Telegraph predicts that 250,000 Bulgarians and Romanians will come to the UK in search of work, and London the areas surrounding the main ports will be the first places people look for work.
Hopefully this new business will generate some new jobs in the region.
Stansted Airport Sold For £1.5bn

Stansted Airport is being bought by Manchester Airport for £1.5 billion. Stansted is currently owned by Heathrow Airport Holdings (who were previously BAA). Heathrow Holdings also own Southampton, Aberdeen and Glasgow airports, and of course, Heathrow.
Heathrow Airport Holdings were forced to sell Stansted after a ruling by the Competition Commission. Now Manchester, the UK’s busiest airport outside London, will control Stansted. The sale is likely to completed as soon as February 2013.
Stansted Airport is London’s third busiest airport after Heathrow and Gatwick. It is the 4th busiest airport in the UK., carrying around 17.5 million passengers each year on 131,400 flights.
14 airlines operated from Stansted, between them they fly to 150 cities in 32 countries across the world.
Stansted employs 10,200 people, 1,400 of whom are employed directly by the airport, the rest in businesses supporting the airport.
This is good news for Stansted and employment in the region as it will ensure that the airport can now continue to grow. Businesses in the region are in favour of an expansion, however, it is not good news for local residents who have been campaigning against any form of expansion for many years.

Stansted Airport Needs To Expand and Offer New Flight Paths

Nothing has been decided yet, but both business leaders and members of parliament are in agreement that the south east needs to see an increase in the number of international flights in and out of the region. Stansted Airport is in a good position to cater for this increase in demand.
John Dugmore, speaking on behalf of the Suffolk Chamber of Commerce, told the East Anglian Daily Times that Stansted airport can be a “key economic driver” in East Anglia. The airport is currently the largest employer in the region, providing around 10,859 jobs across 199 companies within the grounds of the airport. Of these 199 companies, over 80 are retail and food & beverage outlets.
Stansted is now one of the most important airports in Europe. In 2009 is served 20 million passengers, making it the 3rd busiest airport in the UK after Heathrow and Gatwick, with Manchester just behind.
Stansted currently flies to 140 destinations and has 19 airlines operating. It is also an important airport for cargo.
Business With Emerging Markets
The argument for additional capacity at Stansted is that Britain needs to start to increase trade with the new emerging markets and to do this it needs to open up new flight paths that can service London and the South East.

What makes Stansted a logical choice for servicing these new markets is not only its excellent location but also because it is currently running with spare capacity. It currently serves around 17 million passengers a year but it has the capacity to increase this to 35 million without the need for an additional runway.
Carbon Trust Standard
Stansted has been working hard in recent years to improve its carbon footprint, and it was the first major UK airport to be awarded the Carbon Trust Standard, the ISO14001 environmental accreditation and the OHSAS18001 Health & Safety management accreditation.
