Essex has many wealthy residents and partly as a result it also have many excellent independent primary schools. While state schools do now provide an excellent level of education, private schools do have the resources to provide an even higher level of education. There are many pre-prep and preparatory schools in Essex, and many of the independent schools take children from 3 years old through to A levels at 18 years.

The Advantages of Independent Education

The main advantages of a private primary school over a state school is that each child will receive more personal and small group tuition. Class sizes tend to be smaller and create a better learning environment for some children. Schools also have the funds to ensure that the best equipment and books are available for all children.

The foundation that is made in a private primary school can be carried on through their lives. 50% of children from private schools go on to gain the top A grade at A-level, and 90% go on to university.

Many private primary schools also provide extra tuition to help children pass the 11-Plus exams, to gain entry into some of the top grammar schools.

The only downside of private education is the cost!

Sports and the Arts – Soft Skills

Private primaries also excel in sports, with many children learning to play cricket, rugby and hockey at a much higher level than is possible in state schools. Many private schools compete in national competitions in gymnastics and other sports. Also many private primary schools have their own swimming pool and provide children with swimming lessons.

Extracurricular activities, such as art, music, drama and dance are all provided as standard. These can actually help a child to excel in the academic subjects too, creating a more outgoing, confident individual.

Boarding

Of course, what many private schools are famous for is their boarding facilities. Children can stay during the week or all term, at many schools. When both parents are working overseas or far from home, boarding can be a good option. Many children excel in a boarding school environment, and while in fiction they are not always the most fun places to be, many children absolutely love the independence it gives them. Boarding generally starts at 7 years of age.

Social Networking

As much as we try to move towards a classless society, children do form life-long ties with other children at private schools, creating an elite of well educated, wealthy individuals who are all connected. This is partly why so many members of parliament come from private schools, and why so many of the country’s top CEOs are privately educated. Often referred to as the “Old Boys’ Network“.
