4 and 5 star hotels in Essex

Pheasant Lodge & Pheasant Suite in Elmstead Market

Essex does not have many 5 star hotels. In fact, the only one that we are currently aware of is the Pheasant Lodge & Pheasant Suite in Elmstead Market, near Colchester. It has received a 5 Start Gold Award from Visit England (the national tourist board for England) and also a Kellogg’s Breakfast Award.

Pheasant Suites are situated in the picturesque grounds of Balls Farm, which is a 17th Century farm house. The individual lodges provide a very personal and private stay. Bedrooms are fully equiped and some have Queen and king and superking size beds.

Breakfast includes a choice from 19 different local sausages, smoked salmon, fresh berries and an assortment of other delicious treats.

Downside: No children.

The Bull at Great Totham

The Bull is a gastro pub with the addition of fine dining in the Willow Room. There is also lovely cottage on the grounds which been tastefully renovated to provide four beautifully appointed double ensuite bedrooms. It has been awarded a highly commended 4 stars for its restaurant and rooms by the AA.

Old Courthouse Inn, Colchester

This is the second of our hotels within striking distance of Colchester. This 4 star hotel (Visit England) is a 17th Century Inn. The rooms are excellent, although no large. They are extremely well kept though. The hotel is 4 miles south of Manningtree and 6 miles east of Colchester.

Crowne Plaza Resort Colchester – Five Lakes

Yet another great hotel in Colchester! It has been awarded 4 stars by the AA.

Five Lakes is set in 320 acres of Essex countryside and has two golf courses. The bedrooms are large, well furnished and have excellent facilities. They have family rooms too so children are welcome. There is a gym, swimming pool, tennis court, squash, spa and live entertainment which includes a comedy club. It really is a resort!

Great Hallingbury Manor and Hallingbury House, Bishop’s Stortford

Situated close to Bishop’s Stortford in the picturesque village of Great Hallingbury this tudor style country manor hotel is set in beautiful gardens within lovely countryside. It has been awarded 4 stars by the AA and Visit England. It has 31 ones spacious bedrooms with an excellent eating at The Lakeside Restaurant.
