The Colne Valley Railway is a great day out for all the family. The railway was actually constructed by volunteers and steam engine enthusiasts. The trains transported in are repaired and maintained. In addition to the steam trains they often do Thomas The Tank Engine days, which includes plays and even a train ride with Thomas and his friends.

Garden Railway

Visit our attraction for all ages. A few of our volunteers have developed a miniature railway in a Garden Environment. SM32 and G gauge trains run around 100 metres of track through a tunnel, stations and over bridges. Can you find Nessie?

7¼” Miniature Railway

Opened in 2008 this has now been partially relocated and extended with two new stations and a turntable. The ride is 600 metres long and will operate, weather permitting, on all main railway open days.

Model Railway

Two 00 gauge model layouts. Operated by Halstead Model Railway Club. Open only on special days. Call railways for dates.

Exhibition Centre

Open most operational Sundays and at special events. See how our railway has developed over the years, and the previous Colne Valley & Halstead Railway’s early history.

Farm Park

Meander amongst rare breeds in our adjoining Farm Park. Enjoy the woodland picnic area, walk beside the River Colne and wander around animal pens.

Signalbox

This working Signalbox is open for visitors on all operational days.

‘Sidings’ Buffet Car

The ‘Sidings’ Buffet carriage is open every day the trains are running. A typical menu includes all day breakfasts, light lunches, cream teas, freshly made sandwiches, home made cakes and refreshments. Parties are catered for with menus to suit the occasion.

Station Shop

Open all operational days and at special events, stocking a wide selection of Thomas toys and Railway souvenirs.

    Day out with Thomas the Tank Engine

    The next Day Out With Thomas is being held at Colne Valley on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October 2009.

    These days are great fun, with plenty of events. Including story telling, where Thomas the Tank Engine plays with other trains, plus steam engines exhibition, activity tent, and all the other activities that are always present at the Colne Valley Railway – find out more Colne Valley details here.

    The story enactment is always a great fun, often with audience participation.

    Day Out With Thomas Includes:

    • Ride in Reserved Seats The Express Coaches behind Thomas
    • Real life Thomas story enactment
    • Ride in another Friend of Thomas character
    • Other friends of Thomas characters likely to attend include, Daisy, Percy, Mavis, Toad, Diesel, Terence, Mail Coach, Traction Engines Trevor and George and The Troublesome Trucks
    • Sir Topham Hatt, The Fat Controller will be in charge of Thomas and his Friends
    • Many free under cover games
    • Garden and Miniature Railways
    • Well stocked souvenir shops with a large range of Thomas gifts and souvenirs
    • Large grassland picnic area at station
    • Free Face Painting
    • Exhibition Centre and Signal Box open
