Exciting news for martial artists in Essex. 5 Elements Martial Arts, in Basildon, has announced that WAKO GB (the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations) is planning to start organising amateur MMA tournaments. 5 Elements has stated that it is supporting this move and hopes to start training fighters for MMA contests with immediate effect.

“After many months of work in the background, WAKO GB has announced their move into amateur MMA competition. 5 Elements will be supporting this through our close links with WAKO and the BFKKO, offering our students this excellent route into amateur MMA.” Tony Willis, 5 Elements Martial Arts.

What is MMA?

MMA is simply Mixed Martial Arts, and is also sometimes called ‘Vale Tudo’ (Brazilian Portuguese for anything goes) or ‘No Holds Barred’ (NHB). It refers to a form of competition fighting that has a broader set of rules than kickboxing, judo or wrestling alone. In MMA fighters may kick and punch, wrestle, throw and use submission techniques to win a fight.

MMA is the fastest growing sport in America, and grew after fighters felt restricted by the combat options available, i.e. Queensbury Rules boxing, wrestling, judo, karate or kickboxing. There was no way for trained martial artists to be able to use all the techniques they had mastered in a tournament, so the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) was created and MMA was born. Professional MMA fighters now win huge prizes, often in excess of $500,000 for a win.

5 Elements Martial Arts teaches MMA skills on Wednesdays evenings and Saturday mornings at its Basildon school. Contact Tony Willis on 07713 161 164 for more information.
