The Christopher’s Cottage Sports Hall in Southend has reached the final stages of the Essex Business Awards. It has been nomited in the Community category for Southend. The winners will be announced at the Cliffs Pavilion in Southend on 21st September 2012.

The Christopher Cottage Sports Hall is a purpose built sports hall for the disabled. A wide variety of sports are played there, and coaching is often provided. There are activities throughout the week for people of all ages and it is also used by pupils of The St Christopher School for their PE lessons.

The Southend Disabled Sports Club also meet at the sports hall on Friday evenings from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Sports activities include bowls, table tennis, shool, new age Kurling Petanque, bar skittles and darts.

As well as being used by St. Christophers school and the Southend Disabled Sports Club, it is also where CHRIS CROSS run their after-school clubs and holiday clubs. CHRIS CROSS run classes for children between 7 and 14 years during the Summer, Easter and half term holidays. Christopher’s Cottage

Christopher’s Cottage is attached to St.Christopher School in Leigh-on-Sea. It provides residential and respite care for children and young adults between the ages of 5 and 19 years with learning disabilities. It was given an “Oustanding” rating by Ofsted earlier this year for its excellent work in providing “education, care and skills“.

The award is specifically for the sports hall which was built to provide children and young adults with disabilities to take part in a wide range of physical activities.

Christopher’s Cottage provides a vital service to children with learning difficulties and their families in the Southend area. It has been open since 2004 and has 6 bedrooms where children and young adults can be cared for by specialist staff. Stays range from overnight to a maximum of two weeks. They also have a soft play room and outside play area at the cottage.
