Graham Gooch Steps Down as Essex Batting Coach

Graham Gooch has decided to step down as Essex County Cricket Club’s batting coach and take on the role of England coach instead – and who can blame him?

Graham Gooch will remain with Essex as an ambassador fir cricket. He has said that he is very sad to be leaving Essex but he is unable to continue coaching the Essex team while also coaching the England team.

Graham Gooch started coaching the Essex team in 2001, replacing Keith Fletcher as head coach. He stepped down in 2005 to pursue a commercial career with the club. Since 2009 he has been back as Essex coach helping Paul Grayson and also assisting with the England coaching, helping Andy Flower.

Matt Walker will take on the task of coaching Essex. He has stated that he is very excited to be working with Paul Grayson and although he is registered as a player with the club he will be focused on assisting with the coaching too.

One commenter on Facebook, David Dance, says “What is Essex’s loss, is surely England’s gain“. I think that sums it up nicely. Can Graham Gooch can help England retain the ashes?
