Morrisons Buy 49 Blockbuster Stores To Expand Morrisons M

MorrisonsMorrisons have announced plans to purchase 49 Blockbuster stores and transform them into convenience stores, Morrisons M. Morrisons have already bought 7 stores from Jessops.

Morrisons currently focus on the larger supermarkets, however this news means that they plan to encroach on the markets that Tesco Express and Sainsbury’s Local.

Currently Morrison have not confirmed which stores they have agreed to take on. Morrisons have always been stronger in the north of England, however, this move is planned to give them a foothold in some new markets in the south of England, including Essex. Most of the new convenience stores will be opened in London and the south east.

Morrisons in the UK’s 4th largest supermarket chain after Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury’s. This expansion will create around 1400 new jobs.

Morrisons have also been in the new this week as their meat sales have been increasing since the horse meat scandal. Morrisons have their own in-house butchers and have a very short supply chain which means they have a much better relationship with their farmers and abattoirs, and to date there have been no traces of horse DNA in any Morrison products.
